Skunk

Skunk has become the generic term for high quality, very strong cannabis. But this isn’t entirely correct! A little Skunk history, anyone?

Yes, the story of the original Skunk #1 has been told and re-told many many times, and is an essential part of cannabis folklore, but a short recap can’t hurt, right? Skunk finds its roots in the late 1960s/early 1970s and has had significant impact on the cannabis industry as it is today.

It was under the Californian sun that Skunk was developed for the first time by a small community of breeders, yet, it was not discovered by them. One of the growers had a clone of this, so far unstable line, in his garden, and brought it in for a growing project. As time went by, the small community grew to a rather large group of breeders, although it wasn’t that easy to join this group. One would have to be sponsored by a member and had to grow a certain number of Skunks provided by the club as well as strains they brought in themselves. It is said that reasons for the restrictive access were quality control and stabilization of the genetics, cause quite frankly, the beginnings were tough; unstable genetics, difficult crosses, mould, just to name of couple of obstacles the breeders had to overcome.

The original Skunk is a hybrid cross of two Sativa landraces, Columbian Gold and Acapulco Gold, and an Afghani Indica landrace. It was in the 1980s that Skunk made it to the Netherlands where breeders finally stabilized the strain into one of the most appreciated cannabis varieties to date.

This masterpiece of cannabis breeding, nowadays, stands for reliable, rock-solid genetic composition, low-maintenance cultivation and large yields. Instability and vulnerability are history, one that today’s breeders don’t even remember.

Skunks generally fall into one of two flavour categories. The trait of US Skunk varieties is sharp  and herbal, whereas European Skunks are described as sweet and citrusy.

What’s with the smell?

The smell of Skunk strains has often been linked to the smell of the spray from a Skunk, strong and  pungent. It is the terpenes, aromatic compounds that are found in thousands of plant species, that are responsible for the various flavours and fragrances of all cannabis strains. As a side note, cannabis produces over 140 different terpenes.  These can be found in varying concentrations in different cannabis varieties.

When you browse through our Skunk cannabis seeds collection, you’ll quickly notice that we offer a wide range of Skunk hybrids. By now, there are so many Skunk crosses with sometimes only slight modifications on the market, that growers could simply be overwhelmed by the wealth of supply. But no worries, with our built-in filters you will easily find the  perfect Skunk for you!
